Free The Cheeks: Twerk Church is a high energy twerk class designed to empower women. The focus is on creating a safe environment where women reconnect with self, support one another and are free from the social stigmas placed on twerking and women’s bodies. The class focuses on the root and sacral chakras, more specifically, booty & yoni. Women are taught different ways to shake, pop, jiggle, gyrate & ASSolate (isolate) the cheeks while simultaneously unlocking the power & magic located within by embracing her sensuality.

Free The Cheeks is also about restoring the history & origin that western society has tried so desperately to erase. Twerking dates back to many indigenous cultures.
In Madagascar it’s known as Kawitry. East Africans call it Kigodoro, Chakacha, Baikoko & Somali Niiko. In West Africa along the Ivory Coast twerking is called Mapouka. Senegal it is Leumbeul, in Cabo Verde its Funana, North Africa its Chaabi, Cameroon its Bikutsi, Brasil it's dançando Funk, In the Caribbean its wukkup & wine & North America it’s considered twerking, or shaking. Though we use the pelvic region the dance is not considered hypersexual & only done in private. These dances are done at weddings, & family gatherings & everyone from the elders to children participate.
The celebratory dance has always been done by melanated men & women across the diaspora as an expression of celebration, joy and for us, healing. Indigenous (present-day labeled Black) women tend to hold all of their stress and trauma in the womb and abdomen. Free The Cheeks encourages women to free their mind, body, and spirit empowering them to reclaim the most sacred parts of self, by allowing energy to flow through movement and expression. By doing so we’re combating, stress, shame, trauma, and abuse with community, joy, freedom and love.
Free The Cheeks: Twerk Church is just that, a church for women to align and worship self by embracing their bodies & their individuality. They do this by expressing every aspect of themselves not what society tells them is acceptable. The goal is for women to love themselves & radiate that. When we love ourselves we don’t tolerate anything that threatens the love we have for self.
Free The Cheeks:Twerk Church serves as a community space for joy, expression and healing.

Lady, what were you taught about sexuality and sensuality? Are you ready to relearn what you thought you knew? This week Terri and Dom are joined by dynamic sister duo Breezy and Bobbi (the founders of Free the Cheeks) and they take us to Twerk Church.
This discussion dives into what’s really up with what women are taught about sex and sensuality. A lot of us were taught about respectability politics and socialized into participating in the patriarchy based on the traumas of our ancestors.

Today the ladies name the ways that we can subvert the patriarchy. We will hold space and celebrate our wombs. Breezy and Bobbi share with us how they teach women about discovering the freedoms of their body and where they learned to respect and appreciate feminine bodies. Feel the joy.

As the #MeToo movement continues to bring a spotlight to sexual harassment and assault, we’ve been hearing thousands of stories of trauma. But we haven’t heard much about what women are doing to heal: Where are women going to process, relax, express their sensuality, or just to have fun?

A couple months ago one of our students reached out about submitting our class to Blavity. We were honored that she chose to do a write up on her experience with us! The article she wrote left us filled with immense gratitude. As an instructor it’s one thing to know your intentions & have an idea of how people receive them, but to actually hear how women experience you & see that experience expressed so graciously is a whole notha’ vibration. We give thanks for Lorraine Avila @afrociguapa for seeing, supporting, & receiving us. Thank you Lorraine for writing an article that encapsulates so much of who we are.
